Description
The fascinating Old Lighthouse in Dungeness is a unique experience as well as full of history and anyone who is prepared to climb a few steps. It was opened in 1904 and is a Grade II listed building that survived two World Wars before being decommissioned in 1960. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the English Channel and the surrounding countryside. Internally there are a series of mezzanine floors made of slate and supported by steel beams and massive rivets. Each floor is linked by circular concrete stairs which hug the walls and have decorative wrought iron banisters. There is cambered casement viewing windows on all floors for you to see as you ascent. You can also find out how the lighthouse works, and learn about the people who used to operate it as well as admire its industrial Victorian architecture. This 45 metres-plus high walk to the top of the weather vane, 11 meters in diameter with over 3 million bricks, is a unique experience.
