The ancient chalk grassland of Folkestone Downs consists of Castle Hill, Round Hill, Hoywell, Sugarloaf Hill and Cheriton Hill and has been designated as a site of European importance for wildlife, especially for its orchid interest. It is protected as a site of Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), as a Special Area for Conservation (SAC) and forms a part of the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), and there is open access for most of Folkestone Downs.
The White Cliffs Countryside Partnership (WCCP) organises regular guided walks and children's events (the Green Gang) in the Folkestone Downs.  Owned by Eurotunnel and managed in partnership with WCCP.
