Description
Popular entertainment venue with local, national and international acts on the seafront of Margate. The Margate Winter Gardens opened in 1911 and is a popular venue for shows touring or local productions. It history is fascinating, it was turned into a receiving station for some of the 46,000 troops that landed at Margate during the evacuation from Dunkirk. It couldn't be used as a leisure venue during the war as the Isle of Thanet (Broadstairs, Ramsgate and Margate) was a restricted area as there were fears it was an ideal spot for invasion. Though damaged in the war, it was officially re-opened in 1946 and has been entertaining audiences ever since.
