Description
New Tavern Fort on the south bank of the River Thames was added to the defence of the Thames in the 1780s, adding to the artillery forts which were first established there in 1539/40 under Henry VIII’s national scheme of defence against a feared continental invasion. The Fort remained until the early years of the 20th Century and visitors can see its magazines, changes over the years as well as re-enactments on occasions.
