Description
Perry Wood is part of the Kent Downs AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) is described as a beautiful, tranquil mixed woodland with panoramic views that views stretch widely, from Sandwich, Wye Downs to the Isle of Sheppey and the Swale. With coppiced chestnut, native broadleaved woodland, conifer plantation and areas of heathland restoration; the site is important for a variety of wildlife. The site is not ‘open access', but there is a good network of footpaths and bridleways.
The Wood is designated as a Local Wildlife Site and this special ancient woodland lies between Selling and Chilham. It is also a designated Ancient Woodland, meaning that is has been under tree cover since at least 1600AD. Historic sites to be found in the wood include the Pulpit, a viewing tower first built in the 1800s and Windmill Hill, where there is evidence of old earthwork that may be Roman, and a new dig that confirms iron age settlement.
