Description
The Ramsgate Tunnels are housed on the site of a 150-year-old Victorian Railway Tunnel that was abandoned in 1926 after a new station was built further inland. It was one of the few lines that were right next to the beach, and it was one of the reasons it was reopened as a scenic railway in 1936. With the advent of World War II was then converted into an air-raid tunnel system as Ramsgate was heavily bombed, in fact so badly that some residents moved into the tunnels for protection. Visitors can see how they lived down there during the war, with recreated living conditions.
They run two tours a Deep Tunnel Shelter Explorer Tour, and a Tunnel Town Explorer Tour, as well as special tours, and events and you can even stay overnight.
