Sweeps Of Fun
One of the many festivals in Kent is the Rochester Sweeps Festival, held over the May bank holiday. This free, three-day event is one of the largest May Day celebrations in the world, now in its 43rd year. Immerse yourself in a vibrant atmosphere filled with Morris dancers, live music, and lively entertainment. The festival brings the historic town of Rochester to life, transforming it into a riot of colour and sound. The festival also hosts a dynamic programme of international dance groups and workshops. Experience the joy of Spring by celebrating unique cultural traditions including the Jack in the Green Parade. For those looking for family events in Medway in Kent, don't miss the Rochester Sweeps Festival.
Rooted In Tradition
The festival's origins date back to the Victorian era. Back then, chimney sweeps had only one day off a year – May 1st. To celebrate, they would parade through the town's high street, singing and dancing. The festival continues this tradition, showing the town's rich history.
