Description

The heritage of this space is a mystery, however, what is known is that it was found by the son of Mr J Newlove who, while digging for a duck pond, came across a tunnel covered with shells and hence the grotto was discovered. This was in 1835, but when and by whom the Shell Grotto was built is completely unknown. Newlove, however, did know the commercial potential of his son’s find and so opened it to the public in 1838.
There are 4.6 million shells in 70ft of winding underground passages leading to a rectangular chamber, with shells creating a swirling profusion of patterns and symbols, it is an unusual and unique place to visit that continues to amaze visually as well as historically.
