Description

The St Peter in Thanet church as being has over 1,000 years of history, built in 1070 and enlarged in the 12th Century to include the south aisle. Its history includes being a naval signalling station in Napoleonic times due to its prominent tower, and stained glass windows and mosaics date from 1860 and 1900 when extensive works were carried out.
St Peter’s Churchyard has 54 burials from the two World Wars, though in the nine acres of churchyard they can be difficult to find. Due to the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Friends of St Peter’s War Graves have installed two panels showing the location of the graves. You can also take a tour of the Churchyard with St Peter’s Village Tours (please see our separate listing for more details).
