Description
The Dymchurch Redoubt is one of three constructed to act as a supply depot for the smaller Martello Towers. You cannot visit it but you can see it along the sea wall though be mindful that further access may be restricted when there is firing on the Hythe Ranges. Red flags will be displayed when this is in operation.
In the late 18th and 19th Century, a threat of invasion by Napoleon, who wanted to rule Europe and expand his Empire, deemed the Romney Marshes as needed protection. They were seen as the landing point for such an attack and the then Prime Minister, William Pitt, set about building a defence which included the building a series of Martello Towers.
