Description
The Louis Bleriot Memorial is a dedication to pioneering flights across the English Channel and commemorates the pilot's first flight across the Channel from France on July 25th, 1909. It is a granite outline of his aircraft set into the ground, marking the exact spot where he landed.
Louis Bleriot was a self-taught pilot and one of eight fliers first awarded competence certificates. After the failures of many aircraft models, he designed the successful Bleriot XI that took him across the English Channel. His flight lasted 32 minutes with a speed of 45-miles-per-hour, which meant he overtook the French warship that was monitoring his flight. He had no compass and so flew by observation. His flight is considered one of the most significant in aviation history.
