Description

The Royal Military Canal is 28 miles long and running from Seabrook in Kent, to Cliff End in East Sussex and runs through Hythe, and walking along the quiet canal banks it is hard to imagine that it was once a scene of intense military activity. It was built in anticipation of a Napoleonic invasion, with ‘kinks’ along its length as a defensive measure allowing troops to fire along the canal if invaders tried to cross. It was also hoped it would stop smuggling which was a serious problem on the Romney Marsh. it is home t a variety of wildlife including laughing frogs, emperor dragonflies, kingfishers and the majestic mute swan.
The Royal Military Canal begins near Folkestone and passes through the Cinque Ports of Hythe and Rye, and close to numerous villages along the way. See the The Romney Marsh Countryside Partnership website for more details of walks including a downloadable map.
