Description
The St Margaret’s of Antioch Church at St Margaret's-at-Cliffe in Dover is part the St Margaret’s Benefice and is a Grade I listed church that may be one of the earliest aisled churches of its date. Its oldest foundations date back to Saxon times and contain some interesting features including the ancient maritime graffiti in the stonework. The church spans its whole history which also includes the south wall feature which commemorates three local men who lost their lives in the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster in 1987. The West door is an example of early Norman carving, with conservation work carried out to stabilise the stonework and preserve this significant architectural feature of the church.
