Description

Willesborough Windmill, near Ashford, is a white smock mill built in 1869 and constructed on a two-store red brick base and is a grade II listed building. The Windmill incorporates ‘patent’ type shutters in the Sweeps (windmills) and has enough power to turn four sets of millstones, as well as the maize and oats crushing/cutting machine. In 1872 a steam engine was added to complement the sweeps, and at the turn of the 20th Century, the tall square chimneystack made the mill a visible landmark. Over the years its competitive use as a mill was made redundant, and in the 1950s it was shut down and became dilapidated until it was restored in 1991. On a visit, the sweeps might be in operation but it is not guaranteed. Flour is still made in the Windmill and children can make their own, plus lots of activity days during the opening months. Available for hire.
