St James' Church in Cooling

Dicken's Inspiration

Description

St James' Church in Cooling dates from the 13th Century. Little was altered until the 19th Century, when a vestry and porch additions and amendments were carried out. It is a Kentish mixture of ragstone and flint and the church is known for its association with Charles Dickens, who is thought to have set the opening to Great Expectations in the church’s graveyard. The church is in the care of The Churches Conservation Trust.
