St Nicholas Parish Church - Ash

Pre-Norman History

Description

St Nicholas Parish Church in Ash is a medieval church that was built in the late 12th Century and is a Grade 1 listed parish church. The 15th Century tower that was once used as a navigation aid is today home to the church’s 10-bell ring. It also has a large collection of monumental effigies and excavations have found a ground plan of the chapel that reveals it was pre-Norman. Foundations of an even earlier church were also found, making it one of the earliest Christian structures known in Britain.
