Description

White Horse on Cheriton Hill was designed by the local artist Charles Newington,  the Invicta White Horse (the symbol of the county of Kent) was constructed in 2003 to mark the millennium, with the help of soldiers from the Royal Gurkha Rifles in 2003. It is part of the Etchinghill Escarpment Site of Special Scientific Interest and is designated as a Special Area for Conservation, of European importance for wildlife especially orchids, according to the White Cliffs Countryside organisation.
The site is open to the public, but you are encouraged not to drive down narrow lanes to the downs, but to walk along the footpaths from Newington/Peene or Folkestone. The site is privately owned, but there is a right of access. It is part of Folkestone Downs (please see our separate listing for more details).
