Description
Over its history, the Folkestone Harbour Arm has played an important and vital role in the town's history and its legacy is still remembered today in the Arm's and its associated building's restorations. It is now a vibrant social hub, with small food and drink independent outlets. Part of its rich history is that during both World Wars, as it was a vital port of arrival and departure for servicemen and medical personnel, and in World War II it played a vital role in the Dunkirk evacuation of 1940 when an estimated 35,000 troops and 9,000 refugees landed in Folkestone. It struggled to survive after the nearby Channel Tunnel was opened and in 2001 it fell into disrepair. Its recent restoration is all part of Folkestone's redevelopment offering a mix of food, shopping and entertainment areas as well as leisure facilities.
