Description

A former artillery fort was constructed in the 1860s in order to defend the Rivers Medway and Thames against a French invasion. The location of the fort nearby Grain Tower and Garrison Point Fort meant that its guns could support them both during battle. Throughout history, the fort was altered many times and its guns were being upgraded until 1956 when it was decommissioned due to the UK abolishing its coastal defence programme. This led to it being demolished, however, remnants of the fort can still be seen today and the area surrounding has been converted into Isle of Grain Costal Park.
