Love Letters
English Heritage offers help with writing a Valentine’s love letter for those who find putting down the right words a challenge. Their 5 top tips inspired by history to create the perfect love letter. Tip 1 is taking inspiration from a letter from Prince Albert to Queen Victoria and based on a shared experience – the date you met, married or when you last met. Perhaps don’t take Charles Darwin’s approach who wrote a list of pros and cons before he married, focus on the positives for Tip 2. Their Tip 3 based on the discovery of Robert Dudley to Elizabeth 1, write every word like it’s your last. Tip 4 is to ensure it gets to the right recipient! Eight months into her marriage with King Henry Vlll, Catherine Howard wrote a love letter to Thomas Culpepper, a gentleman of the King’s privy chamber. However, the letter was discovered, and both were put on trial for treason. By the end of the year, Catherine’s lover Culpepper had been executed. Tip 5 is inspired by letters from the Somme and highlights how important it is to be yourself when writing to a loved one. Cornish boy John Glasson Thomas ‘Tommy’ met Gertrude Brooks ‘Gertie’ on the eve of WW1 and kept in touch. Their letters were a blend of day-to-day news; Cornish pasty-based jokes, and small bursts of affection. Unfortunately, Tommy died in 1917, and Gertie kept the letters and never married.
Prince Albert to Queen Victoria letter written in 1839 before they married ‘How that moment shines for me still when I was close to you, with your hand in mine. Those days flew by so quickly, but our separation will fly equally so’.
