The Friend, Certificate 15, Universal Pictures. A New York City writer, Iris, finds her comfortable, solitary life thrown into disarray after her closest friend and mentor bequeaths her a Great Dane. The huge dog creates immediate practical problems for the writer, from furniture destruction to eviction notices, and creates more existential ones. Yet as Iris finds herself unexpectedly bonding with the canine, she begins to come to terms with her past and her own creative inner life.
The Ugly Stepsister Certificate 18, Vertigo Releasing. Combining comedy and horror, this film is a surprising and raw twist on the fairy tale ‘Cinderella, seen from the stepsister’s, Elvira, point of view. She is willing to go to great lengths to conform to the kingdom’s ideals of beauty.
Until Dawn Certificate 15 Sony Pictures. One year after her sister disappeared, Clover and her friends head to the remote valley where she vanished, hoping to find her. Exploring an abandoned visitor centre, they soon encounter a masked killer who murders them one by one. However, when they mysteriously wake up at the beginning of the same night, they’re forced to relive the terror over and over again.
