Eastbridge Hospital was a hospital not as we know them but in the original sense of the word, a place of hospitality. The Eastbridge, or the Hospital of St Thomas the Martyr, was founded in the 12th Century and it was created to provide for pilgrims visiting the tomb of St Thomas Becket Canterbury Cathedral. It still provides a permanent home to several people as an almshouse. it and the Franciscan Gardens and Greyfriars Chapel provide a quiet escape from the bustle of Canterbury.
