The Folkestone Museum

Treasure Troves

Description

The Folkestone Museum is full of treasures found in the town which date back as far as the Bronze age. Locals also donated items such as costumes, artworks and engravings that showcase the history of the town. The museum's origins are in part due to the financial woes of the antiquarian and fossil enthusiast Mr Samuel Joseph Mackie, whose liquidation of his assets in 1856, resulted in his large collection of fossils being put up for auction, which were then eventually given to the museum.
In the early 1900s, the Dover Hill Anglo-Saxon burial ground was discovered during the works to build a new coastal road. These finds and other additions over the years were added to the museum's collection and in 1920 the excavations of the East Cliff of the Roman villa site further enhanced its archaeological historical displays.
