Description
Tucked between the waters of the River Great Stour in the heart of Canterbury, Binnewith Island Theatre is the city's dedicated outdoor theatre. The island's name comes from the Jutes of Kent and means "the land between the willows". Over the centuries, the site has been part of Roman Canterbury, home to the 13th-century Greyfriars Friary, and later a metalworks and dyeworks, before being cleared and turned into an open-air stage.
Short daytime shows bring the city's story to life, from a whistle-stop history of Canterbury to medieval tales, sword-fighting displays, nature talks about the river and a falconry display. In Summer, the island also welcomes touring outdoor theatre companies, with room for an audience of several hundred on the lawn.
Accessibility
The island is natural terrain and uneven in places, but a sloped path on the left leads to the audience area; portable ramps are available, and staff are on hand to help. Drop-off is possible at the end of Water Lane for a shorter walk.
Dogs
Only registered assistance dogs are allowed on the island.
