MOTHER’S DAY HISTORY
American Origins
According to Wikipedia.org, Mother’s Day is an annual holiday celebrated in the US on the second Sunday in May. The early attempts to create a special day include, in 1868, Ann Jarvis, Anna Jarvis’s mother, organised a committee to establish a Mother’s Friendship Day, the purpose of which was “to reunite families that had been divided during the Civil War”. Over the years, Anna Jarvis herself campaigned to establish a Mother’s Day and on May 9, 1914, the US Congress declared a proclamation for the first national Mother’s Day. In 1912, Jarvis had trademarked Second Sunday in May and Mother’s Day, but soon loathed the commercialisation of it, and she was arrested in 1948 for disturbing the peace while protesting against the commercialisation of the Mother’s Day she had created. Jarvis said she “…wished she would have never started the day because it became so out of control”. She died later that year. In the US, traditions include churchgoing, the distribution of carnations, and family dinners. It is the third largest holiday in the United States for sending cards.
UK History
In the UK, Mothering Sunday is a day honouring mother churches, a term depicting the Christian Church as a mother in her functions of nourishing and protecting the believer, which is said to have started in the 1500s. According to britannica.com during the Middle Ages custom developed of allowing those who had moved away to visit their home parishes and their mothers on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This became Mothering Sunday, which continued into modern times, although it has largely been replaced by Mother’s Day.
